College for All Jubilee School: How to Win
This final session of the College for All Jubilee School series will look forward and discuss how we can win tuition free public college, dignified labor conditions, academic freedom, and debt cancellation. Speakers will include Aissa Canchola Bañez and Sara Garcia (bios below).
- Aissa Canchola Bañez is Policy Director at Protect Borrowers, formerly known as the Student Borrower Protection Center. Protect Borrowers is a non profit policy, litigation and advocacy organization fighting to build an economy where people come first and debt doesn’t limit opportunity. As policy director, she oversees the organization’s work advancing policies that alleviate the crushing burden of debt on working families across the country. Previously, she led legislative development and strategy as Legislative Director and Deputy Chief of Staff for Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley. Prior to that she served as a Policy Advisor for the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee where she handled higher education affordability and access issues and also spent time at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau where she fought to protect students and young consumers from being ripped off.
- Sara Garcia leads the higher education policy portfolio for Ranking Member Sanders (I-VT) as a deputy education policy director on the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee. Sara was formerly a political strategy and outreach manager at Crooked Media, where in addition to her role in the Crooked Media Workers Union, she worked with state parties, campaigns, and grassroots organizations to develop political and campaign priorities. Before Crooked, she served in the Department of Education working to remove barriers for low-income students and students of color in the financial aid process. Sara was born and raised in Texas, and hails from San Antonio.
