50 Over 50: Older Student Debtors

The Debt Collective, the nations first union of debtors has a number of working groups including the 50 Over 50, student debtors 50 and older which is breaking the stereotype of student debtors being younger folks in their 20’s and 30’s. We know that debtors 60 and older are the fastest growing demographic of student debtors.

Folks who are in the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, and older just as anyone else shouldn’t be burdened with student debt. These are folks who are likely to die in debt. These debts are set to be cancelled upon their death but meanwhile will have to use their social security checks to make payments or decide between groceries, supporting their kids or grandkids, or paying these debts.

The Department of Education has the authority to cancel these debts in a number of ways. One of which is using Federal Claims and Collections Code section 902.2 to cancel debt based on the age and the health of a debtor.
