  Violence

 ot only be free\, it should be free-ing. In other words\, higher education
  should not incarcerate anyone with either a debt sentence or a prison sen
 tence. And yet\, university investments (like endowments and pension funds
 ) profit from state violence--weapons manufacturers\, private prisons\, su
 rveillance technology\, and more. Join us to learn about the University of
  California Move Your Money campaign\, and what it might take to begin the
  process of divesting higher education from state violence.\n\n 	Hannah Ap
 pel is a co-founder and organizer with the Debt Collective\, as well as th
 e Associate Faculty Director of the UCLA Luskin Institute on Inequality an
 d Democracy and an Associate Professor of Anthropology and Global Studies 
 at UCLA. She is also an economic anthropologist interested in transnationa
 l capitalism and finance\; finance\, debt and debtors’ unions\; the Afri
 can continent’s place in global capitalism\; the economic imagination\; 
 anti-capitalist and abolitionist social movements. Her research and teachi
 ng interests are guided by the economic imagination. What does it mean to 
 understand racial capitalism ethnographically\, and to work actively to un
