SUMMARY:Capitalism Can't Stop Our Care: Lessons from Abortion Accompaniment
  Networks Across the Global South
DESCRIPTION:\n9:30am PST / 12:30pm EST\n12:30 ECT / 14:30 ART\n18:30 WAT /
20:30pm EAT\n\nMore than three years after the overturning of Roe v. Wade\
, abortion has become more difficult and expensive to access in the U.S.\,
increasingly putting pregnant people at risk of criminalization and medic
al debt. But across the Global South\, feminist organizers have long navig
ated oppressive political conditions to build accompaniment networks\, vol
unteer-led organizations that help people self-manage their abortions and
much more.\nJoin the Debt Collective’s Healthcare Worker Solidarity Coll
ective for a panel discussion with leaders of abortion accompaniment netwo
rks and feminist collectives from Ecuador\, Argentina\, and Sub-Saharan Af
rica. Together\, we’ll explore the potential of the accompaniment networ
k model to transform care into collective power through mutual aid\, femin
ist organizing\, and international solidarity.\n\nLearn more about our gue
st speakers and their organizations:\n\nSocorristas En Red (Argentina)\nSo
corristas en Red is a national abortion accompaniment network based in Arg
entina. Since 2012\, Socorristas ("first responders") have volunteered to
disseminate information about and support individuals through the process
of self-managing their own abortions.\n\nSocorristas En Red have served a
key function in the Green Wave abortion rights movement by building networ
ks of feminist collectives across Argentina\, including HILANDO Socorros F
eministas. Socorristas En Red is also part of Red Compañera Feminista\, a
network of accompaniment networks that spans Latin America and the Caribb
ean.\nLas Comadres (Ecuador)\nLas Comadres is a national abortion accompan
iment network based in Ecuador. Since 2014\, Las Comadres has organized to
provide information and support to women\, trans men\, and non-binary peo
ple seeking abortions in Ecuador. Along with Socorristas En Red\, Las Coma
dres is also part of Red Compañera Feminista\, a regional network of acco
mpaniment networks that spans Latin America and the Caribbean.\nMAMA Netwo
rk (Sub-Saharan Africa)\nMama Network: Mobilizing Activists around Medical
Abortion (MAMA) Network is a collaboration of grassroots activists and fe
minist groups based in Sub-Saharan Africa working to share evidence-based
and stigma-free information about self-managed medical abortion with women
on a community level.\n\nMAMA Network’s model for abortion care include
s bringing information to people and communities\, putting medication abor
tion pills into peoples’ hands\, and building the movement for self-mana
ged abortion. MAMA aims to transform the landscape of reproductive care in
Africa by introducing medical abortion as a safe\, accessible\, and effec
tive method to end an unwanted pregnancy outside of the clinical setting.
